On Kawatura Rod
It is my own creations, fusing my background as the lacquer finisher and my experience in fly fishing and rod design. It only made sense to me to match the coating to the shaft, both natural materials. I have been a lacquer finisher after graduation from high school, and I became a fly fisher when I was a junior high student. Besides making my own brand of fly rods, I still help my father finish large pieces such as table.
I started fly fishing when I was a junior high student. I was a graphite user almost from the start, and didn't care much about my gear, but everything changed when I cast a bamboo rod, around the turn of the century. It refueled me with the energy to explore this sport from a totally different perspective. The material of bamboo was and still is, very intriguing.
When I first started making bamboo rods, I couldn't accept the standard urethane or spar varnish. I believe japan lacquer is the most durable paint/coating in the world, and it lasts hundreds of yers without deterioration. It only make sense, because urushi is the protective sap that the tree applies to itself, and its durability is proven by the national treasures in museums!
My rods are made for the dry fly fishing in small streams. It presupposes slack line presentations, and for the best shape of line to avoid dragging, the rods have to have a proper bending characteristics and stiffness. I came up with the above models that I can recommend, and I tested them all by intense fishing. Because urushi is a bit tinted, the scratches and nicks show up well, signaling the need of a maintenance work.
I am a light line specialist and I don't take custom order. Everything I offer, I test thoroughly in the field before release. I am lucky because I can fish in 15 minutes afler leaving my workshop door.

4-layer urushi finish over highly figured wood. The bag is now all micro mesh that does't affect the surface slime of the fish, thus low-impact. You can even catch drifting bugs with this.
I can offer a free re-polisihg service when the finish starts to look dull after several year's use.
Kawatsura Fly Reel
DT #3-4 plus 15-35m of backing. Weight 150g. 100,000 yen.
Every year I have my friend machine this reel to balance with my own cane rods and TIemco synthetic rods under my name. The right amouht of weight help the cast feel very light and smooth. I apply four coats of urushi lacquer on both side plates. Production is extremely limited due to the reel maker's capacity. Comes with a leather pouch.
